DE // 'The Weather Diaries' zeigt die Faszination Norden.
Rauhe Natur, wildes Wetter und alte Geschichten; es liegt eine geheimnisvolle Aura über der subpolaren Klimazone.
In einer Welt, in der ein halbes Jahr lang Düsternis ein halbes Jahr Licht ablöst, hat auch die Mode eine andere Gestalt.
Die 3. Nordic Fashion Biennale zeigte deshalb Designer und eigentlich Künstler aus Island, Grönland und von den Färöer Inseln.
So nah und doch so fern von uns Kontinentaleuropäern.
Kein Wunder, dass sich so isoliert eine ganz andere Kultur entwickelt hat, als unsere.
Wetter und Lichtverhältnisse sind ein prägender Faktor knapp südlich des Polarkreises.
Das Land gibt nicht viel her. Menschen waren seit jeher darauf angewiesen, aus den knappen Ressourcend, die ihnen zu verfügung standen, das beste herauszuholen.
So wurden auch Materialien wie z.B. Robbenfelle - Abfallprodukte der Robbenfänger in Grönland - für die Herstellung vor allem zweckmäßiger Kleidung verwendet.
Was die Modewelt in Paris, Mailand, London und New York über Jahrzente hinweg geprägt und erschüttert hat, scheint kaum Einfluss auf die nördlichsten Flecken der Zivilisation gehabt zu haben.
Die in 'The Weather Diaries' abgedruckten Werke schaffen es diese Stimmung, das Gefühl und das Misterium einzufangen, und eine ganz besondere Faszinatio zu erwecken.
Melancholie und Ursprünglichkeit.
Die Bilder erinnern an zarte Elfen, wilde Naturfölker und die wilde, unergründete Natur selbst.
Und sie erzählen die Geschichte von einer völlig anderen Entwicklung und Orientierung der Mode.
Irgendwie haben es nordische Modeschöpfer mittlerweile geschaft, unsere Modewelt zu unterwandern, und allmählich bis an ihre Spitze zu klettern.
Zahlreiche gefeierte Designer haben Wurzeln im hohen Norden.
Doch waws ist es, das ihre Kreationen so besonders macht?
'The Weather Diaries' ist ein Buch für alle, die sich für Mode und den Norden interessieren, aber auch für Träumer und für die, die etwas Neues entdecken wollen.
Zu schade, dass ich es leider nicht geschafft habe, mir die Ausstellung in Frankfurt am Main anzuschauen.

In a world, where the year is parted in periods of complete darkness and on the other hand pure daylight, even fashion has another face.
The 3rd Nordic Fashion Biennale offers a platform for promising designers and artists from Iceland, Greenland and the Färöer Islands.
So close and yet so far from us in the core of Europe.
No wonder that a culture quite different from ours has developed in those remote places.
Weather and lighting conditions pose an essential determination just a little more south than the arctic circle.
There's not much to live off the land. People were always forced to rely on and make the best of only few resources available.
That's why, e.g. materials as the skin of seals that were traditionally hunted in Greenland, were used to produce functional clothes above all.
What dictated and rocked the fashion world - as presented by and in Paris, Milan, London or New York - for decades, hardly touched or influenced the northernmost patches of civilization at all.
The artwork printed in 'The Weather Diaries' somehow manages to capture the atmosphere, the feeling and mystery, and to awake a certain special fascination.
Melancholy and purity.
The images suggest delicate fairies, wild peoples and the wild, unknown nature itself.
And they tell a story of an entirely different development and orientation of fashion.
Somehow more and more norse couturiers keep climbing up to the very peak of the international fashion industry.
Many celebrated designers have their roots in the far north.
But what makes their creations that special?
'The Weather Diaries' is a book for all those who are interested in fashion and nordic culture, but also for dreamers and those who want to discover a new obsession.
Too bad, I couldn't make it to the exhibit in Frankfurt am Main.
